Give Me a Minute! 15 English Giving Verbs That Make Everyday Conversations Easier

Give Me a Minute! 15 English Giving Verbs That Make Everyday Conversations Easier

Why “give me a hand” works but “explain me the problem” doesn’t.

“Give me a minute.”
“Send me a message.”
“Buy me a coffee.”
“Tell me the truth.”

These are simple sentences, but they reveal
one of the most useful patterns in English.

영어를 공부하다 보면 수여동사라는 표현을
접하게 됩니다.

Give, send, tell, show 같은 동사는
누군가에게 무엇을 주거나 전달하는 상황에서
자주 사용됩니다.

그런데 모든 동사가 같은 구조를 사용하는 것은 아닙니다.
이것이 오늘의 핵심입니다.

The Big Idea

I gave him a book.
나는 그에게 책을 주었다.

I gave a book to him.
나는 책을 그에게 주었다.

Both sentences are grammatically correct.
But not every verb follows both patterns.

1. What Are Giving Verbs?

전통적인 한국 영어 문법에서는
수여동사를 주로 4형식 문장에서 설명합니다.

영어 문법에서는 두 개의 목적어를 취하는
동사를 설명할 때
ditransitive verbs라는 용어를 사용합니다.

대표적인 구조는 다음과 같습니다.

Subject + Verb + Person + Thing

I gave him a gift.

I = Subject
gave = Verb
him = Indirect object
a gift = Direct object

간접목적어는 일반적으로
누가 무엇을 받는지를 나타냅니다.

직접목적어는 전달되는 대상이나
내용을 나타냅니다.

일부 동사는 다음과 같은 구조로도 바꿀 수 있습니다.

Subject + Verb + Thing + to/for + Person

그러나 to와 for는 마음대로 바꿔 쓸 수 없으며
동사마다 사용 가능한 구조도 다릅니다.

2. GIVE — The Most Familiar Giving Verb

Give는 수여동사를 배울 때
가장 먼저 알아야 하는 동사입니다.

Give me a minute.
잠깐만 시간을 줘.

Give me a hand.
나 좀 도와줘.

She gave me a wonderful gift.
그녀는 나에게 멋진 선물을 주었다.

Can you give me another chance?
나에게 기회를 한 번 더 줄 수 있니?

I’ll give you a call tomorrow.
내일 전화할게.

여기서 주목할 점은 실제 물건을
주지 않는 문장도 있다는 것입니다.

기회, 도움, 전화, 시간처럼
추상적인 것을 전달할 때도
give를 사용합니다.

Compare

Give me the document.

Give the document to me.

Both structures are possible.

3. SEND — Messages, Documents and More

Send는 이메일과 일상적인 연락에서
매우 유용한 동사입니다.

Send me a message.
나에게 메시지를 보내줘.

Please send me the updated schedule.
수정된 일정을 보내주세요.

I’ll send you the details later.
자세한 내용은 나중에 보내드리겠습니다.

She sent her parents a postcard.
그녀는 부모님에게 엽서를 보냈다.

전치사 to를 사용하면
다음과 같이 표현할 수 있습니다.

Please send the report to me.
보고서를 저에게 보내주세요.

실제 업무에서는 상대방에게
자료를 요청할 때 특히 많이 사용합니다.

무언가를 보여주는 상황에서 사용합니다.

여권을 보여주세요.

I’ll show you the results.
결과를 보여드리겠습니다.

She showed her friends the photos.
그녀는 친구들에게 사진을 보여주었다.

전치사 to를 사용하는 문장도 가능합니다.

She showed the photos to her friends.
그녀는 사진을 친구들에게 보여주었다.

How to와 함께 사용하면
상대방에게 방법을 설명하거나
시범을 보이는 의미를 나타냅니다.

5. TELL — Information, Stories and Secrets

Tell me the truth.
사실을 말해줘.

Tell me a story.
이야기 하나 해줘.

Can you tell me the reason?
이유를 알려줄 수 있나요?

He told us an interesting story.
그는 우리에게 흥미로운 이야기를 해주었다.

여기서 say와 tell의 차이를
이해하는 것이 중요합니다.

Tell vs. Say

Tell me the truth.
사실을 말해줘.

Say something to me.
나에게 무언가를 말해줘.

Incorrect: Say me the truth.
Correct: Tell me the truth.

Say는 일반적으로
“say something to someone” 구조를
사용합니다.

6. BUY — Someone Owes You a Coffee!

이번에는 선물이나 음식을
사주는 상황입니다.

내가 점심 살게.

He bought his wife some flowers.
그는 아내에게 꽃을 사주었다.

다르게 표현할 수도 있습니다.

Compare

I’ll buy dinner for you.

Both are correct.

전치사 for를 사용하면
다음과 같이 표현할 수 있습니다.

내가 당신을 위해 커피를 만들겠습니다.

주의할 점은 이것이
make의 사역동사 용법과
다른 구조라는 것입니다.

She made me laugh.
그녀는 나를 웃게 했다.

이 문장에서 laugh는
직접목적어가 아니라 목적격보어입니다.

내 노트북을 빌려줄게.

Borrow와 lend는
방향이 반대라는 점을 기억하세요.

Lend vs. Borrow

그녀는 어머니에게 편지를 썼다.

16. TO vs. FOR — The Secret Behind Giving Verbs

이번에는 가장 중요한 문법 차이를
정리하겠습니다.

To는 일반적으로
전달되는 대상이나 방향을 나타냅니다.

For는 누군가를 위해 무언가를 하거나
마련한다는 의미를 전달할 수 있습니다.

TO — Transfer or Direction

Give the book to him.
그에게 책을 주다.

Send the email to her.
그녀에게 이메일을 보내다.

Show the report to the manager.
관리자에게 보고서를 보여주다.

FOR — Benefit or Purpose

Buy a gift for him.
그를 위해 선물을 사다.

Make some coffee for her.
그녀를 위해 커피를 만들다.

Get a chair for the guest.
손님을 위해 의자를 마련하다.

하지만 이것은 의미를 이해하기 위한
기본적인 구분입니다.

어떤 전치사와 구조를 사용할 수 있는지는
각 동사의 문법적 특성에 따라 달라집니다.

17. The Biggest Trap: EXPLAIN

이 부분은 영어 학습자가
반드시 알아야 하는 내용입니다.

다음 두 문장을 비교해 보세요.

Correct: Explain the problem to me.
그 문제를 나에게 설명해 줘.

Incorrect: Explain me the problem.

Explain은 일반적으로
give와 같은 4형식 구조를 사용하지 않습니다.

마찬가지로 다음 표현을 비교해 보겠습니다.

Common Mistakes

Incorrect: Explain me the situation.
Correct: Explain the situation to me.

Incorrect: Describe me the problem.
Correct: Describe the problem to me.

Incorrect: Suggest me a solution.
Correct: Suggest a solution to me.

Incorrect: Say me the answer.
Correct: Tell me the answer.

These distinctions matter in both
professional and everyday English.

모든 동사가 목적어 두 개를
연속해서 사용할 수 있는 것은 아닙니다.

따라서 단순히 한국어 뜻이
“주다”나 “전달하다”와 비슷하다는 이유만으로
수여동사 구조를 적용하면 안 됩니다.

18. When Changing the Word Order Changes the Emphasis

두 구조가 모두 가능한 경우에도
항상 완전히 똑같은 느낌은 아닙니다.

I gave John the book.

I gave the book to John.

두 문장은 같은 상황을 설명할 수 있지만,
문맥과 강세에 따라 강조점이 달라질 수 있습니다.

특히 수신자가 새롭거나 중요한 정보인 경우
to John이 문장 끝에 오는 구조가
자연스러울 수 있습니다.

I sent Sarah the report.

I sent the report to Sarah, not Michael.

두 번째 문장은 전달받은 사람이
Sarah라는 점을 분명하게 강조합니다.

또한 목적어가 대명사인지,
긴 명사구인지에 따라서도
자연스러운 어순이 달라질 수 있습니다.

19. Useful Giving Verbs in Business English

실제 업무에서 바로 사용할 수 있는

Final Thought: Grammar Is About Connection

Giving verbs are not simply about
giving someone a physical object.

They help us share information,
offer opportunities, communicate ideas,
express feelings, and help other people.

중요한 것은 동사 하나만 외우는 것이 아니라
누가 무엇을 누구에게 전달하는지를
이해하는 것입니다.

Give Someone Something.

Send someone a message.
Show someone an example.
Buy someone a coffee.
Teach someone a new skill.

But explain something to someone!

Sometimes the smallest grammar difference
makes the biggest difference in communication.
