OF Is More Than “의”: The Hidden Meanings Behind One of English’s Most Useful Words

Korean learners often memorize of = “의”.

That works sometimes.

But not always.

In real English, of can express possession,
connection, material, quantity, identity, cause, characteristics,
and even the essential nature of something.

So “of” is not just a translation.
It is a relationship word.

1. OF for Possession

This is the meaning most learners know first.

The roof of the house
집의 지붕

The name of the company
회사의 이름

The owner of the restaurant
식당의 주인

But English often prefers ‘s for people.

John’s car
존의 차

sounds more natural than:

The car of John

Easy shortcut

People → often use ‘s
Things / organizations / ideas → often use of

2. OF for Part of a Whole

This is one of the most important uses.

one of my friends
내 친구들 중 한 명

some of the workers
작업자들 중 일부

half of the cake
케이크의 절반

most of the people
대부분의 사람들

Here, “of” means:
“from inside this group.”

3. OF for Material or Composition

a cup of coffee
커피 한 잔

a bottle of water
물 한 병

a piece of wood
나무 한 조각

a group of people
사람들의 한 무리

Here, of tells us what something contains
or what it is made up of.

4. OF for Identity or Explanation

Sometimes of does not mean possession at all.

It explains exactly what something is.

the city of Seoul
서울이라는 도시

the month of May
5월이라는 달

the idea of freedom
자유라는 개념

the concept of time
시간이라는 개념

This use is closer to:

“namely” or “the idea called…”

5. OF for the Essential Nature of Something

This is where of becomes much more interesting.

a man of courage
용기 있는 사람

Literally:

“a man who has the quality of courage”

a woman of intelligence
지적인 여성

a person of integrity
진실성과 원칙이 있는 사람

a matter of importance
중요한 문제

Here, of describes the essential quality
or character of a person or thing.

Compare:

a courageous man
= 용감한 남자

a man of courage
= 용기라는 본질적 특성을 가진 사람

6. OF for Cause

die of cancer
암으로 죽다

die of hunger
굶주림으로 죽다

tired of waiting
기다리는 것에 지치다

sick of complaining
불평하는 것에 질리다

In these expressions,
of often introduces the cause or source of the feeling or condition.

7. OF After Adjectives

English has many adjective + of combinations.

afraid of
~을 두려워하는

proud of
~을 자랑스러워하는

aware of
~을 알고 있는

capable of
~할 능력이 있는

full of
~로 가득 찬

tired of
~에 지친

He is proud of his son.
그는 아들을 자랑스러워한다.

She is capable of handling the problem.
그녀는 그 문제를 처리할 능력이 있다.

8. OF After Verbs

Some verbs naturally go with of.

think of
~을 생각하다

dream of
~을 꿈꾸다

approve of
~을 찬성하다

consist of
~로 구성되다

remind someone of
~을 떠올리게 하다

This team consists of ten people.
이 팀은 10명으로 구성되어 있다.

That song reminds me of my childhood.
그 노래는 내 어린 시절을 떠올리게 한다.

9. OF for Measurement and Quantity

two liters of water
물 2리터

ten meters of cable
케이블 10미터

five kilograms of steel
철 5킬로그램

three hours of work
3시간의 작업

Here, of connects a measurement to the thing being measured.

10. OF in Famous Everyday Expressions

Of course.
물론이지.

kind of
약간 / 어느 정도

sort of
약간 / 일종의

out of
~밖으로 / ~이 부족해서 / ~때문에

because of
~때문에

instead of
~대신에

in front of
~앞에

He was kind of nervous.
그는 좀 긴장한 상태였다.

We ran out of material.
우리는 자재가 다 떨어졌다.

Instead of waiting, let’s start now.
기다리는 대신 지금 시작하자.

11. OF Does Not Always Translate Naturally into Korean

This is one of the biggest traps.

a cup of coffee

We do not normally say:

“커피의 한 잔”

We simply say:

“커피 한 잔”

The same is true with:

a group of people
한 무리의 사람들 / 사람들 한 무리

the city of Seoul
서울이라는 도시

a man of courage
용기 있는 사람

Do not translate “of.”
Understand the relationship.

12. A Quick Test

What does of mean in these sentences?

1. He is a man of great experience.

Answer: characteristic / quality

2. One of my coworkers called me.

Answer: part of a group

3. The door of the building is locked.

Answer: relationship / possession

4. She is afraid of dogs.

Answer: object or source of emotion

5. The team consists of engineers and technicians.

Answer: composition

Final Shortcut

Instead of memorizing:

OF = “의”

try thinking like this:

OF shows a relationship.

possession
part of a whole
material
identity
quality
cause
quantity
connection

Once you stop translating of word by word,
many English expressions suddenly become much easier to understand.

“Of” is a tiny word.
But it carries a surprisingly big job.
